Hi there,
I have recently 'super-sized' the pond in my back garden, and am now in the process of designing a decked area to go over the stream that feeds into it, and over the gravel beach effect I have created.
My dilemna is what type of wood to use on top. I already Have 1 normal softwood decked area outside my conservatory, and thought some thing a little more natural down by my pond would be better.
I have an area 4m x 4m that I would like to construct. I have visited a local saw mill, and enquired about Oak, which although 4 times the price, i was told would require minimal maintenance, eg jet wash to clearslime in winter/spring.
I just want a nice flat, non-slip 4x4 square, any recommendations of what I can use ?
many thanks shaun

The other alternative Shaun is cedar. Just as expensive as oak and harder to get, but as far as decking is concerned, it is the Rolls Royce material. It has a delicacy of texture and a beautiful soft natural colour that needs no treatment. It is easier to work than oak.
Oak however looks good without being over fastidious about working it i.e. the big butch rustic look.
Another possibility is Redwood, maybe not quite so rotproof as the Cedar and the Oak but a must if that is the colour you want.
There is a third choice and I'll let someone else come up with that.

You may wish to consider a 50% wood and 50% PVCu alternative. Twinson decking is a fantastic non slip eco friendly system which is guaranteed for 25 years and comes in 8 colours. We have recently fitted this product to an outdoor adventure park water slide steps and I feel would be a great looking alternative for your project.

Decking over the pond
Sounds like you are advertising to me Roger. You dont happen to own the company that sells this material by any chance?
It is a worthwhile product to consider though, especially if there is some effort to use some recycled PVCu. I know if you use all recycled PVCu the quality/performance of the material is seriously impaired, but the one of the things that makes wood a desirable material is that it is a sustainable resource. The materials that go into PVCu are not.

Many thanks for all your comments.
To let you know I have installed a 3m x 3m Millboard Vintage Oak deck over the end of my pond.
Not only does it give a fantastic look of old weathered wood, but it is incredibly none-slip, and I cannot recommend it enough.
that coupled with the fact its almost maintenance free :o)
