An inventor is set to revolutionise the swimming pool industry after patenting the world's most environmentally-friendly pool. John Harris, has designed the Round Timber Pool, which significantly reduces the environmental impact of swimming pools by retaining 80 per cent more heat than traditional pools.
The above-ground pool can be heated by various methods including solar power, and the unique insulation design means energy is retained unlike conventional pools. The pools have inner and outer walls which sandwich up to 100mm of insulation and the base has 25mm, so heat is retained in the water and not lost through the sides.
The Round Timber Pool does not require excavation work and is also made from sustainable materials, using timber and minimising the use of metal and plastic.Mr Harris, from Newport in South Wales has spent three years designing and patenting the pool. He said: "This will revolutionise swimming pools forever because not only is it by far the most environmentally-friendly pool available, it also has a flexible modular design and can be used in a variety of ways.
"At best, current pools offer 6mm of insulation, which means they are not environmentally-friendly because they only retain 20 per cent of the heat put into them. On top of that, many are angular or have steel or plastic walls which don't retaion heat and often resemble an agricultural water tank.”
"I wanted to address these problems and did so by using my joinery skills to create a truly round, ascetically-pleasing pool that uses sustainable materials, and retains 80 per cent of its heat thanks to the unique insulation system in the walls and floor. The result is the only truly round timber pool on the market."
Mr Harris created a new system to manufacture the pool to make sure it was perfectly round, which involves machine-shaping 12 modules and connecting them together. The pool shell has only 12 major parts. The Round Timber Pool can be made to any size and used as a pool to swim in or as a relaxing leisure facility.
Round Timber Pools come with an internal stainless steel and external wooden ladder, a combined pump and sand filter, a water treatment kit, a back wash hose, a vacuum kit and a solar cover. A wide range of quality liner designs that are 0.75mm thick are also available.
It can be supplied with a resistance jet swim system, a range of lighting and sound systems, and comes in a choice of external finishes.
Sundomes, decking, pool houses, motifs inside the pool, and heating systems are also available.
"Our pool can also be fitted with a circular Sundome roof, which attaches to the top seating ring so it can be used for more of the year, and in keeping with our environmentally friendly objectives, heats the water and helps retain it." added Mr Harris.
"I am now working on other products including an oval pool and a range of cedar hot tubs. A roof to enable the pool to be used all year round is also under development.
"Environmentally-friendly heating options include using pumps, which don't generate heat but capture it from the air and move it into the water.
"Electric or gas heating systems can also be supplied and by retaining much of the heat created by these systems, the pool reduces the users' carbon footprint compared to other pools."
The pools come with a 15-year guarantee against rot and insect attack, while the vinyl liner carries a five-year warranty. Other components carry a one-year warranty.
