OXYGENATING PLANTS or SUBMERGED AQUATICS

The plants that live below the surface of the water of the pond produce essential oxygen in the daytime during to the process of photosynthesis when they manufacture the sugars to be used for growth from the energy in sunlight and carbon dioxide amongst other things. This is produced by the respiration of the animals and fish in the pond and the plants own transpiration at night.
These submerged plants also provide cover and a spawning mat for fish (N.B. and food for snails).

Anacharis alsinastrum.also known as Elodea canadensis and Philotria canadensis, sometimes referred to as , Canadian Pondweed or even Drain Devil or Babington’s Curse after the Cambridge Professor that introduced it to this country in 1847. It has smaller leaves than the Elodea crispa and is extremely vigorous particularly in new ponds. Once you have it in your pond it seems forever trying to fill it up with vegetation quicker than you can remove it. In its favour, it has been said that it is excellent at removing toxins from water.

Callitriche, Water Starwort is indigenous. It is a good oxygenator and is grazed by fish. It sends up bright green growths up to the surface in starry masses.

Despite being slender and brittle it grows to great lengths.

By far the most efficient oxygenator, it is not a native plant but it is easily kept under control if it does get out of hand in small pools.

Hottonia palustris or water violetHottonia palustris or water violetHottonia palustris or Water Violet is native and has tiny little whorls of flowers that emerge up to 20cm above the water surface in early summer. Myriophyllum spicatum or Water Milfoil is a good oxygenator for small pools, preferring calcareous or 'limey' water. This has a little flower spike that emerges from below the water surface.

Myriophyllum proserpinacoides or Parrots FeatherMyriophyllum proserpinacoides or Parrots Feather Myriophyllum proserpinacoides or Parrots Feather, often sold as an oxygenator but apt to float its foliage on the surface is a plant to avoid especially in large pools in mild areas. It tends to choke up the environment in no time at all.
